Flocculonodular Lobe (Lobule X)

Lobus flocculonodularis

The vestibulocerebellum: regulates balance, eye–head coordination and holding gaze steady.

Anatomy

  • Flocculus (hemispheres) and nodulus (vermis); separated by the posterolateral fissure.
  • Directly connected with the vestibular nuclei.

Functions

  • Balance and truncal posture.
  • Calibration of the vestibulo-ocular reflex and holding gaze steady.

Clinical

  • Damage causes truncal ataxia, a wide-based gait and nystagmus.
  • Medulloblastoma (the most common malignant brain tumor of childhood) often arises in the midline, around the vermis and fourth ventricle.

In the model

How this structure is defined in the 3D model, and the data source.

SUIT atlas (Diedrichsen et al., 2009) lobule labels; each point of the cerebellar surface was assigned to the nearest lobule just beneath it. Overlap between SUIT and the model’s cerebellum: Dice 0.90.
